Yes. I'm still doing my 'heya' thing. I like it. Sue me :)
Your girl's well. Very. Especially after a lovely night out with my girls for, you guessed it!
Did you know that karaoke started in Japan? Why am i not surprised! Haha!
Since last week went so well it only made sense that we do it again. Different joint, different day, and hell yeah FREE TEQUILLA SHOTS :)
It was weird in the beginning. We cancelled it and then like an hour to the time when karaoke begins we decided what the heck!
The night began with a long sit down with Malaika talking about where we both are in our lives and how we can't wait to talk about this year in like, 5 years, with kids in our arms and good hubbies on our sides. We laughed, had some real talk on somma the stuff we're playing pretend on and even enjoyed a classical music song courtesy of a long phone call from one of my many stalkers who knows that i'm single. If this is what i missed out on when i was with Gladiator TAKE ME BACK! Hehe. Anyway. It was a good laugh.
Then it hit us that we had been waiting for lil' ol Momo for too long (2 hours) so we headed out and were going to call her to tell her to come through to Rafikiz straight. She met us as we were walking down the stairs and nearly threw a fit. Haha!
Ffw'd to Rafikiz. Is it just me or is the set list for Rafikiz worse than Psys? Aiaiaiai! And their fries are expensive and kidogo! We felt cheated. Like that was gonna stop us! We came to get our groove on and set the pace for our diva coated karaoke nights and nothing was gonna ruin the vibes of our night.
Think i performed first. I always seem to out of the 3 of us. Song? Mercy by Duffy. I like it, don't get me wrong, but there was no variety so i chose to do the song out of lack of several options. Ooooh it gets funny! I'm there singing as best as i could and some chic who was high as ** just decided to whine and grind on me. She kept holding my hand, grabbing my waist and OMG! It was bad.
I shoulda played along, i know, but i was afraid that if i did, she'd make out with me. And honey, i was not that drunk. Not that i would if i wasn't. Never mind. So as i belt out the chorus, "You got me begging you for mercy, why won't you release me..." everyone at Rafikiz was busy laughing at the irony of my situation. Momo and Malaika were practically on the floor. I was hopeless. As soon as i finished the song, it was back to my chair so i could stuff fries in my face and try to forget the last four minutes of my life. Waah!
Malaika did Rihanna's Take a Bow, diva hand gestures while singing as always and Momo did a song from the early 2000's by i think Gwen Stefani called Don't Speak. She killed it by the way.
We were (are, why lie) pretty broke right then, just so you know, so we were gonna stretch the fries for like the whole night and get buzzed on the free tequila shots until Malaika's neighbours, who conveniently happened to be in the neighbourhood, decided to join us at the diva table (it's copyrighted by the way) and rusha drinks for us. Is there a God or what? Ha!
Looked like everything was going up from that moment on until Momo and I were called by Nimo to perform LeAnn Rhimes' - How do i breathe. Heh! No practice, no preparation, so as you can imagine we (read me) went off key. It was terrible. But you know how it is. We DEFINATELY were not the suckiest people doing karaoke. In fact, its the peeps that suck that bring the house down. People do not go for karaoke for the amazing singing.
Haha! There was this one guy that would call all his pals when he'd be performing and they would pass the mic to each other to mumble tunes into it until the chorus where he would shout the lyrics and then proceed to threaten to kill us all if we did not clap for his amazing performance. Said guy was on such a roll that he joined his girlfriend when she was singing and we were treated to lip karaoke (a 4 minute kissing session) with the instrumental of God knows which song playing in the back. Haha! He killed it for me! Guy was awesome, and clearly, very wasted by 10pm. That is the life!
Apparently, my rendition of Valerie by Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse was exquisite (Momo and Malaika told me). Everyone stopped drinking and talking to listen and watch me sing a song that they (karaoke hosts included) didn't know. It made sense after coz they clapped and cheered when i was done. And there i was thinking i bored the daylights out of them. Haha! Maybe there's a lot more hope for me in the Kenyan music industry after all. And what a better way to debut than by doing my own rendition and ode to heavyweight (realistically light weight) Amy Winehouse?
Omondi from Churchill performed his new single called... Uuuuuuuuuummmm... Dude was funny mayne! But i can't remember the name of his song! His video is aite. If you must watch it, watch it for his crazy awesome facial expressions. Epic! What was even more epic was our rendition of Bootylicious by Destiny's Child. Yes. All three of us, dance moves, choreography and all. Waaaaah! Talk about FUN! I dunno why the group broke up. Whoever said there couldn't be 3 Beyonces was not there yesterday night. I loved it!!!
The hosts from Hot 96 FM were pretty rad too. Definitely a better feel to Psys. Felt like we were on air. And the DJ from i think Inferno was awesome. You can tell when someone loves what they do and if they know that they're good. He did.
The night was crazy! Malaika got hit on by the guy Omondi performed with that song that i can't seem to remember, Momo was audio-ly accousted by some strange man who looked like he needed to go back home to his wife, and i was, well, you know what happened when i was singing, plus there was this random guy that just came up to me and started winding on my bootay! Hell nah!
It was awesome all the same. Everywhere we go the diva table gets attention, both vocally and aesthetically. Hehe. It doesn't help much that we ONLY dance with the three of us. It's a diva thing. Hehe!
Oooh! I remember! Somewhere at the end of the night in my drunken stupor after spilling my drink and then Momo's shortly (by mistake, i swear. I was talking and gesturing, and then bam) i shuffled. Yes! SHUFFLED LMFAO style! FINALLY! Been trying to for long then outta nowhere, it came to me. Guess i wasn't self concious so my feet moved :) HAPPY HAPPY FEET :)
So anyway, we all had early mornings and mine happened to be earlier than the rest coz i had to make my way to school. Cue in the roll of bad luck:
1. My alarm didn't ring
2. It was late
3. I just put on my clothes and ran to catch a mat (dunno if it counts as a walk of shame coz no dudes were involved. What say you?)
4. It was raining outside
5. All the mats were full
6. I waited too long for a mat with an empty seat to come along. It didn't... For 10 minutes at least
7. I missed the school bus
8. I went to town so i could catch a mat to Athi
9. It was muddy so i messed my shoes
10. I was late for my first class
11. Oh yeah... And a lil' tipsy
Someway somehow, i made it to class before my lecturer and even ended up sharing with the class a devotion on first impressions, a lesson i had conveniently learnt from one of Malaika's neighbours (Greg) that i might share witchu someday soon. So when she (lecturer) asked me what prompted me to share on that topic, i couldn't help but laugh...
Did i mention that Linda from Cup Half Full told me that she could smell liquor on me (spilt drinks remember?) and my eyes looked droopy (3 hours of sleep). I was dehydrated and my voice was hoarse which i totally love, thank you very much Black Ice. I'm switching to White wine as soon as i record a song when my voice is still freshly hoarse. It's the sexy deep kind.
But somehwere around 10 AM, i was myself (read sober) again. What's even more kick ass is that i went for both of my classes and didn't snooze a wink. God i love my 21 year old body! You know you have to give thanks now before you roll into your 30's coz your body reacts different after all nighters then. You'll see...I'm so blessed and glad to have awesome friends like Momo and Malaika in my life. They've been there for me through my weird heart thingy whatever it is i'm going through. I LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
Will the LA karaoke divas take over the scene next week? Who knows :) We're awesome!
Oh yeah, and my weekend just started :) Had to rub it in a little :-P
Kisses my darlings,
Single Unsingle
